A Kibbe capsule wardrobe is a small set of around 11 everyday pieces (a jacket, a coat, a few tops, two bottoms, a dress, a knit, two pairs of shoes and a bag) chosen so that every piece follows your Kibbe type's lines and works with the others. The categories are the same for everyone; what changes by type is the cut: length, fit, structure, and how much the waist is defined.

Below you will find an 11-piece capsule for each of the 13 types, grouped in tables by type family (each type also has its own page in our 13 Kibbe types overview), followed by a practical method for building it and a list of what each family can safely skip. This page focuses on everyday and weekend dressing. For office outfits, suiting and work shoes, see our separate Kibbe work wardrobe guide.

The 11 capsule categories

Every capsule here uses the same slots, so you can compare types side by side:

  • 1. Jacket
  • 2. Coat
  • 3. Basic top
  • 4. Statement or dressier top
  • 5. Trousers
  • 6. Skirt
  • 7. Dress
  • 8. Knit
  • 9. Everyday shoes
  • 10. Dressier shoes
  • 11. Bag
  • Eleven pieces will not cover your whole life, and it is not meant to. It is the core that everything else should work with. Once the core feels right, you can add duplicates in new colors, seasonal layers and occasion pieces.

How to build your Kibbe capsule, step by step

  • 1. Confirm your type first. Building a capsule on a guess is the most expensive mistake. Use our 7-question quiz or our method for finding your type without a quiz.
  • 2. Audit what you own. Lay out every piece you wear regularly and mark which slots in your table it already fills. Most people find they already own four or five.
  • 3. Start with the jacket and trousers. These two pieces set your silhouette more than anything else, so get them right before buying tops.
  • 4. Pick two or three base colors. Choose colors that work with each other so every top goes with every bottom. Body type does not decide your palette; see colors for Kibbe types for ideas.
  • 5. Fill one gap at a time. Buy the next missing slot, wear it for a few weeks, and only then move on.
  • 6. Tailor rather than replace. Shortening a jacket, taking in a waist or hemming trousers often turns a near-miss into a capsule piece.
  • What to skip: the items each family can leave out

    FamilyUsually safe to skipWhy
DramaticCropped jackets, fussy ruffles, small printsThey break the long line and look too small for the frame
NaturalStiff, close-fitting suits, tiny bodycon dressesThey fight the relaxed width of the frame
ClassicExtreme oversizing, very short or very long hemsThey tip the balance away from moderate
GamineLong, unbroken maxi dresses, oversized slouchy piecesThey swamp a compact frame
RomanticBoxy jackets, stiff fabrics, harsh geometric shapesThey hide the waist and the softness of the body

Remember this site uses Kibbe's original 13-type model; Kibbe's current system uses 10 types and folds pure Natural, Classic and Gamine into neighbouring types. If you identify with one of those, the neighbouring columns in the tables above are a good second reference.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many pieces should a Kibbe capsule wardrobe have?

There is no fixed number. Around 10 to 12 core pieces is a practical start, covering one jacket, one coat, a few tops, two bottoms, a dress, a knit, two pairs of shoes and a bag.

Do I need to replace my whole wardrobe for my Kibbe type?

No. Start by identifying which pieces already fit your type's lines, then fill the gaps slowly. Tailoring can bring many existing pieces closer to your type.

Can two Kibbe types share a capsule?

Neighbouring types often share several pieces, especially within the same family. The main differences are usually jacket length, fit and how much the waist is defined.

Is a Kibbe capsule the same as a work wardrobe?

Not quite. A capsule covers everyday dressing; a work wardrobe adds suiting and office-specific shoes and bags, which we cover in the Kibbe work wardrobe guide.
